Reading with understanding
Short passages, shared reading and comprehension questions that move from what happened to why it matters.
Subject
Taught by Prarthana Khatiwada — lower secondary teacher in Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu.
English is the subject where confidence matters as much as accuracy. In my lower secondary classes I work on both: students read, write and speak a little more each week, and they get used to the idea that a mistake is part of the process rather than a verdict on their ability.
I taught English at Little Moon English Academy from November 2023 to April 2025, alongside Computer Science and Health, and I am continuing my B.Ed. at Ganesh Multiple College.
Short passages, shared reading and comprehension questions that move from what happened to why it matters.
Guided paragraphs, letters and short compositions, with feedback focused on one or two improvements at a time.
Pair work, role play and class discussion so students practise English out loud in low-pressure situations.
Words introduced in context, revisited in later lessons, and used in students’ own sentences.
School leaders and parents who want to know how English is actually taught in this classroom, and other teachers looking for a starting point. If you would like sample lesson materials or a scheme of work, ask — I am happy to share what I have.
Good English teaching is cumulative. A student who speaks once in class this week will speak twice next week, and that is the kind of progress worth planning for.
